Welcome to Warwick's Road Trip Society

Do you want to get away from the Warwick bubble? Would you like to see the world with your mates? Then join this soc! We're planning to establish the group for the 2010-2011 academic year but first we need to see if anyone wants to join.

We would be organising both small trips around the county and UK, epic country-wide scavenger hunts as well as hopefully an annual Epic Road Trip around a few of the Capital Cities of Europe!

The trips are equally intended towards car lovers and drivers, and for those who simply have wanderlust and wish to travel! If you don't have a car, don't worry, we will pair you up with suitable groups and have plenty of socials to help integrate you into groups beforehand.

Scavenger hunts

What is a scavenger hunt? It's a competition. Here is the general gist of it.

Get into a team of 4-5 people with your friends, invent yourself a good team name. There is a big list of a couple hundred tasks - every team has the same list - and each task will earn you a certain amount of points - some goals are worth more points than others, things that take you further away from Campus will earn you more points. The team who score the most points wins!
We've got a time frame (1 week perhaps). We all start from the piazza on campus, the start is announced by some kind of loud noise, run to your homes/cars and voyage across the United Kingdom looking for points, and you must return to the piazza by 6pm on the 7th day to declare your points!
and remember: you must have EVIDENCE of completing a task to get your point. (either by timestamped photo, receipt, film or physical evidence)

Example goals: (Generally, they need to be feasible and within the UK, so you can't suggest 'climb up Big Ben' really.. it'd be nice but it's not really legal)

Try and cover as much of the UK as possible. Don't neglect Scotland, Wales and Ireland!
1. Reach the summit of Big Ben, Snowdon or Scafell Pike. (50 points!)
2. Bring back a beer mat, or glass, from an irish pub. (25 points)
3. Take your photo with the royal guard (5 points, 25 if you can get them to smile!)
4. Climb on top of the lion statue in Trafalgar Square (3 points)
5. Eat some Scottish Haggis (must include receipt that it's from Scotland!) (5 points)

Etc, comment below with more suggestions!

Site Revamp

The WRTS website had lain dormant for a few months but now it's had a fresh lick of e-paint and a bit of a re-arrangement.

The front end of the site is now on Blogger as warwickroadtripsociety.blogspot.com and this will be where society news and events are posted (often with parallel forum topics).  The forum is still to be found at warwickroadtripsociety.freehostia.com/forums with a nice new look.

If you have an questions you'd like to ask you can do use either site but for more complex stuff it's better to use the forums.

Keep an eye on the Blogger site for up to date info on WRTS!  New stuff should be up soon!

Cheers!

Weston-Super-Mare

Overview
Weston-Super-Mare is a seaside town on the Western Coast of England, just south of Wales. It's just a two-hour drive from Coventry. It's the epitome of a kitschy British coastal town. It was the second trip we took, and was certainly much less adventurous than Europe, but you can't compare the two, they provided totally different experiences.

Stuff to do
This little excursion was very simple, short and easy-going. Three days with your best friends and a chance to escape from the bubble for a weekend and do something a bit different: sun, sea, the beach, some terrifying sinking mud flats (very messy, very fun) and campstove-Tikka Masala. As well as the seafront, there's a viewing wheel (is that what they're called? Like a mini London-Eye), lots of watersport activities and a a steam-powered funfair... really bizarre. The Campsite was really nice, had good facilities (for those who like their comfort!) and plenty of open field to pitch your tent in, seemed quite popular with young people, all screaming a game of 'I have never' at the top of their lungs well into the night!

Prices
Camping was £18 per night, for a pitch for four people. So that's £4.50 per night for your accommodation (We would probably spend two nights). The entire journey (and back to coventry) is 240 miles, which is about £40 for your average student car. Split that between all four passengers makes a grand total of £19 per person for this 3-day holiday. Plus whatever you wish to spend on food and recreation.

Because it was relatively cheap and very easy to plan, it's very probable that this sort of small-scale excursion will be the first trip the society will undertake in the year, preferably when it's nice and hot!

WRTS Exec Meeting

Date: 22/09/2010

Location: Dirty Duck

Europe!

Overview
This was the big expedition that started it all. One car, three (naively ambitious) students, 3000 miles! This was definitely an adventurous trip, and we had no idea what awaited us. But the experience was fantastic, and it's given us the experience of how to handle disaster and make a fantastic holiday out of it!

We managed to visit the Belgium and Brussels (Bruges), Amsterdam (Holland), Munster, Rinteln, Hannover, Hamelyn and Berlin (Germany), Vienna (Austria), Venice, Bologna (Italy) and Paris (France) all within two weeks.

Stuff to do
Oh my god, what isn't there to do! Bruges ofters famous sightseeing and delicious waffles and Belgian chocolates; Amsterdam usually pulls a big student crowd for the nights out (for obvious reasons!); The German countryside is, actually, quite stunningly picturesque, a big surprise for us all; Certainly, Venice was the most eye-catching of locations, we never made it to Rome when we went in 2010 (It was the Easter weekend, so getting to the Roman Catholic capital of the world was probably a bad idea!) But hopefully it will become a possibility next time around! It's mostly inspired by the traditional, student European roadtrip. It's a must-do for any undergraduate, become cultured and well-travelled while you're still young!

Prices and important stuff
Because this is such a long trip (at some 2500 miles), it is a very good idea that you find another friend who can drive, and get them insured on your car for 21 days, so you can take it in turns driving every day. It usually costs about £80-100 for this, but depends on your license, car and driving history. It might seem an unnecessary amount of spending, but if you're stuck driving every day for hours, it can destroy the holiday experience pretty quickly!

We plan to offer this trip for under £400 per person. (not including food and recreational spending) Most of that goes towards petrol, camping is pretty cheap, but some cities won't offer camping (such as central Venice) so it is possible that one or two nights might include hotel accommodation.

Finally we have a website!

Rightio. Exams are out of the way and we can finally devote a bit of time to getting the website up and running! Hoping to get that petition of 30 potential joinees sorted out as soon as we can so we can get a stall up for the freshers fair! Oh my days. Business.
